Choosing a central heating insurance policy

Author: Dave Sabri

If you have a gas boiler and/or central heating system, then it is a good idea to take out an insurance policy on your central heating boiler, so that the cost of any expensive emergency repairs do not have to come out of your own pocket. Most energy suppliers offer insurance policies of this type to their customers, but it is not entirely necessary to take out insurance with the same firm that supplies your energy – in fact, it could be a lot cheaper if you shop around on the open market.

Every policy is different, so it’s a good idea to evaluate what you are likely to need before you purchase a policy, as you do not want to find yourself in a situation where your insurance is inadequate, but you don’t want to be paying over the odds either: You have two main choices when it comes to heating insurance.

You can insure just the boiler and the controls, or you can get a policy which covers your entire heating system. Some plans offer additional emergency cover in case anything should go wrong with your plumbing, wiring, or you lose your house keys and need to get in a locksmith. This can all add up, however, so it is worth evaluating what you are really likely to need in the way of cover before splashing out on the most expensive policies.

Some policies don’t provide free boiler safety checks, or pay for any damage caused by the build up of limescale. For safety reasons, you should have your boiler checked every year by a qualified, registered technician, so if this is not included in your policy you’ll have to factor in approximately £70 extra per year to your overall energy costs.

If you have a brand spanking new house with new, reliable heating equipment, then a cheap policy covering the bare essentials will be fine. If you live in an older house, where the plumbing and wiring is a little on the antiquated side, then you might want to take out more comprehensive cover.

Although most heating insurance policies provide a free twenty four hour helpline and emergency callout service, the definition of the word 'emergency' can vary widely between policy providers. For instance, some insurance plans do not consider a lack of hot water to be an emergency, and others do not consider the failure of a central heating system during the summer months to be one either. Check with your policy provider as to their definition of an emergency before purchasing your insurance.

Most plans have an initial no-claims period of around thirty days, in order to prevent people signing up to them after their boiler has broken. It is also important to check whether your particular type of boiler can be covered by a prospective insurer, so be sure to check before you buy.

Heating Cover: the Basics

Author: J Tillotson

Nowadays we have insurance for everything – the car, the home, the family dog, even our lives. But there's one type of insurance that often gets forgotten – heating insurance.

Winter is still with us and the last thing you need on a cold dark January night is your boiler to break down and to be stuck with no heating for days on end while you desperately ring every firm in the yellow pages to come and fix it. This is supposing you could actually afford to pay the call out fee, labour charges and cost for parts once you found someone willing to come out at short notice!

With this in mind, it's worth looking at taking out heating cover. This lesser known form of insurance works in a similar way to other types of insurance, in that you pay a monthly or annual premium to a firm. This premium will then cover you for any heating system problems you may encounter throughout the year, and the cost of parts, labour and callout are already covered. It may also mean that the engineer places you on a priority list, resulting in a quicker service.

There are varying levels of heating cover available. The lowest cover is Boiler Only, which just covers the actual boiler and the controls if they break. The higher end is Full Cover which takes car of the boiler along with pipes, radiators and the hot water system.

You can even get cover for your drains, external plumbing and electrical wiring but as this level of cover is expensive, sometimes as much as £30 per month, consider whether you'd really need it.

Also check if your yearly boiler inspection is included in the premium. This can be a stand-alone charge of £90 so if you can get it included in the cover, it can save you money.
Bear in mind that heating cover will only apply if you own your own home. If you live in rented property, either through a council or a private landlord, it is their responsibility to maintain the heating system in the property.
